William L. Weir Interview
William L. Weir is a freelance writer for The Atlantic, Slate, and more. His new book is a 33 1/3 volume on BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
How did you get to where you are today, professionally?
I was a general features writer for the Hartford Courant, when I began freelance writing. My day job gave me a lot of flexibility in terms of what I could write about, but I wanted to focus more on music, usually some quirkily specific aspect of it. My first freelance piece was for Slate and about the increase in wordiness in pop music (hip hop obviously plays a role in this, but the trajectory of verbosity had begun decades earlier).
Did you have any mentors along the way? What did they teach you?
