Sowmya Krishnamurthy Interview
Sowmya Krishnamurthy is a music journalist with bylines in Rolling Stone, Billboard, XXL, and many more. As an on-air host, she has appeared on MTV, MSNBC, and VH1, and she also hosted and programmed SiriusXM’s The Look Out radio show. This week marks the release of her first book, Fashion Killa: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion.
How did you get to where you are today, professionally?
My journey in hip-hop begins in the most unlikely place in the world: Kalamazoo, Michigan. Growing up in a small town in the middle of nowhere, escapism came from music. Listening to music, watching MTV and BET for hours on end and buying magazines like Vibe and The Source from the grocery store.
By the time I was 13, I was completely convinced I would move to New York City and work in hip-hop. I didn’t tell anybody and I never doubted it. It was just a knowing. it was meant to be. I’m a big believer in manifestation and I would constantly dream and fantasize about working for Sean “Puffy” Combs or hanging with Jay-Z.
