Sabelo Mkhabela Interview (OkayAfrica)
Sabelo Mkhabela is a writer and editor currently working for OkayAfrica as South Africa Arts and Culture Editor. In addition to writing for various publications, he's also done research and writing for TV and documentaries.
How did you get to where you are today, professionally?
I started by contributing to blogs in the early 2010s shortly before I dropped out of university. I did an internship at Live MagSA at around the same time and that introduced me to the media world and I wrote for pretty much any publication that was willing to publish my work. In most of those cases, I wasn’t paid but that’s how I managed to build a strong portfolio. After freelancing for OkayAfrica for years, I was offered a permanent position as a staff writer and I grew into an editorship role.
Did you have any mentors along the way? What did they teach you?
