Hugo Reyes Interview (Freelance Writer)
I’m Todd L. Burns, and welcome to Music Journalism Insider, a newsletter about music journalism. Click here to subscribe!
Hugo Reyes is a freelance writer, largely publishing on post-trash and his excellent Medium page. On the latter, he focuses almost exclusively on emo, "the genre of music I’m the most invested in," he explains. In this excerpt from our interview, Hugo explains what he'd like to see more of in music journalism right now.
How did you get to where you are today, professionally?
For most of college, I did a specialty college radio show called Running on Punk Rock n Roll. You can find some of the episodes on Mixcloud if you’re curious. It is where I kind of developed my interviewing chops and got to talk to a bunch of local bands, along with some music writers I admired. Near the end of the show in 2018, I decided I wanted to give music writing a try. I had been out of college for a year and needed a new place to divert my energy towards. My first review was Burnt Sugar by Gouge Away and I kind of got the writing bug piecing that review together. That was on Post-Trash and has been my home for the past couple of years.
