Dylan Green Interview (Pitchfork and Reel Notes)
I’m Todd L. Burns, and welcome to Music Journalism Insider, a newsletter about music journalism. Click here to subscribe!
Dylan "CineMasai" Green is a Contributing Editor at Pitchfork and host of the Reel Notes podcast. He's been a freelance writer for many years, focusing largely on hip-hop, and runs the incredibly useful Nu Musique Friday newsletter, which lists just about every rap and R&B release of note each week.
How did you get to where you are today, professionally?
Writing and music have always been passions of mine, and aside from poetry in elementary/middle school, I was really into film criticism. After rewatching the movie Osmosis Jones, I decided to see if I could walk the walk, and I read it back to myself and was impressed. I decided then and there that I wanted to be a film critic. I studied Cinema Studies in college and wrote for my school's paper. Once I got out of college, I interned at InteractiveOne before freelancing for several sites within their network, including GiantLife and The Urban Daily. These sites were where I began to explore writing about music instead of just experiencing it, and that's led me to the path I've been walking for the last 8 years.
