Archives and Historical Resources [SPECIAL EDITION]
Archives and Historical Resources [SPECIAL EDITION]
I’m Todd L. Burns, and welcome to Music Journalism Insider, a newsletter about music journalism. I highlight some of the best stuff I hear, read, and watch every week; publish news about the industry; and interview writers, scholars, and editors about their work. My goal is to share knowledge, celebrate great work, and expand the idea of what music journalism is—and where it happens. Questions, comments, concerns? You can reach me anytime at music.journalism.insider@gmail.com. And if you're not already subscribed to the newsletter, you can do so at musicjournalisminsider.com.
During the month of August, I’m taking a break from the regular format to present a series of special editions. This week’s newsletter features a Google Doc I’ve been working on with Laurent Fintoni:
Archives and Historical Resources for Music Journalists
Over the past several years, I’ve become a bit obsessed with archives. I’ve spent most of my working life writing and editing for the internet, and I know all too well how impermanent it can be. Laurent and I bonded over the subject of digital archives when we worked together at Red Bull Music Academy, and we wanted to create a resource page for music journalists that would point the way toward fascinating archives and historical resources. It’s not a comprehensive list by any means. We only have about 130 entries in the Google Doc right now, but we have a huge list of resources that we’re going to be adding over the coming weeks and months.
We’d also love to hear from you. What archives and resources have you found useful as a music journalist? We want to pay tribute to the hard work that folks are doing around the world to preserve music history, and we'd like to help ensure that these resources are accessible and well-publicized. Please hit reply on this email if you have anything that you think should be included.
Special thanks on this project go to Miranda Reinert, who helped edit many of the blurbs in the Google Doc. Subscribe to her newsletter, it's great!
